Geolatinas Code of Conduct
GeoLatinas is an inclusive organization that thrives in respect and professionalism towards our members and contributors. We believe diversity is a strength and we value everyone for who they are. We want our community to be a harassment-free experience. We understand differences exist and we celebrate them to make our community a rich environment for all our members to succeed and feel safe.
This code of conduct aligns the rules we request our community to adhere to and it applies equally to everyone in GeoLatinas (members, volunteers, leaders, advisors, liaisons, followers, and any other individuals involved in our organization). The code of conduct also applies to all managed spaces by us: website, email, email distribution lists, slack, social media (X, Facebook , IG, LinkedIn, Youtube)
We pledge to act and interact in ways that contribute to an open, diverse, inclusive, and healthy community.
Be welcoming, friendly and patient. We strive to be a community that welcomes and supports people of all backgrounds and identities. This includes, but is not limited to members of any race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, color, immigration status, social and economic class, educational level, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, size, family status, political belief, religion, and mental and physical ability.
Be considerate and respectful. Not all of us will agree all the time, but disagreement is no excuse for poor behavior and poor manners. We might all experience some frustration now and then, but we cannot allow that frustration to turn into a personal attack. It’s important to remember that a community where people feel uncomfortable or threatened is not a productive one. Members of the GeoLatinas community should be respectful when dealing with other members as well as with people outside the GeoLatinas community. Any information shared in our slack space is considered exclusive and private to the author, and is not authorized to be shared in any way, including social media, without consent of all individuals involved.
Be mindful of your words. Remember that sexist, racist, and other exclusionary jokes are offensive to those around you.
Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down other participants. Behave professionally. Remember that harassment and sexist, racist, or other exclusionary jokes are not appropriate for the community
When we disagree, we try to understand why. Disagreements, both social and technical, happen all the time and GeoLatinas is no exception. It is important that we resolve disagreements and differing views constructively. Remember that we are different. The strength of GeoLatinas comes from its diversity, individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. Different people have different perspectives on issues. Being unable to understand why someone holds a different viewpoint doesn’t mean that they’re wrong. Don’t forget that it is human to err and blaming each other doesn’t get us anywhere, rather offer to help resolving issues and to help learn from mistakes.
Community leaders are responsible for clarifying and enforcing our standards of acceptable behavior and will take appropriate and fair corrective action in response to any behavior that they deem inappropriate, threatening, offensive, or harmful.
Community leaders have the right and responsibility to remove, edit, or reject comments, commits, code, wiki edits, issues, and other contributions that are not aligned to this Code of Conduct, and will communicate reasons for moderation decisions when appropriate.
Instances of abusive, harassing, or otherwise unacceptable behavior may be reported to the community leaders responsible for enforcement at geolatinas@geolatinas.org. All complaints will be reviewed and investigated promptly and fairly, and anonymity will be ensured as much as possible. All community leaders are obligated to respect the privacy and security of the reporter of any incident.
