About GeoLatinas Mentoring

Mentees who join the GeoLatinas Mentoring Program are paired with an experienced student, doctoral candidates and industry professionals for a period of time established by the partnership. Mentees receive support and advice concerning study organization, university life, professional careers, and work-life balance conflicts from their mentors. In addition to providing personalized support, the GeoLatinas Mentoring Program also provides knowledge sharing opportunities to facilitate our personal and professional growth as a community.

Los mentees que se unen al Programa de Mentores de GeoLatinas se emparejan con un estudiante con experiencia, realizando programas de postgrado y profesionales de la industria durante un período de tiempo establecido por la mentoría. Las mentees reciben apoyo y consejos sobre la organización de los estudios, la vida universitaria, la carrera profesional y los conflictos para equilibrar la vida laboral y familiar. Además de proporcionar un apoyo personalizado, el Programa de Mentoría de GeoLatinas también ofrece oportunidades de compartir conocimientos para facilitar nuestro crecimiento personal y profesional como comunidad.

Our Mission 

The GeoLatinas mentoring program is an initiative dedicated to GeoLatinas members. The program provides a supportive and motivational environment where participants exchange impactful strategies to navigate the professional landscape as Latina geoscientists.

Nuestra Misión

El programa de mentoría de GeoLatinas es una iniciativa dedicada a sus miembros. El programa proporciona un entorno de apoyo y motivación en el que las participantes intercambian estrategias de impacto para navegar por el camino profesional como geocientíficas latinas.

  1. To transfer the mentor’s knowledge about career, studies, migration, university, working life, etc.
  2. To be a female role model and motivate all generations.
  3. To reflect and communicate the mentor’s experiences.
  4. To develop intercultural competence, counselling and reflective skills.
  5. To propose, develop, measure and accomplish personal and professional development plans.
  6. To help in highlighting the mentee and each other strengths and work around existing weaknesses.

You can apply to be a mentor if you are…

  1. An active member of the Geolatinas community
  2. Keen on supporting other women in the
    geo- and planetary sciences fields at any stage of their professional careers.
  3. Willing to use your experiences and background as tools to help other.
  4. Committed to your own development as a mentor. 

You can apply to be a mentee if you are…

  1. An active member of Geolatinas
  2. Referred by an active Geolatina member
  3. Willing to meet with your mentor for at least three months and actively engage in your development plan.
  4. Open minded and receptive to feedback as crucial aspects of your personal and professional evolution

Previous Initiatives

This program focuses on experienced GeoLatinas mentoring the younger generation of latin women in geo and planetary sciences. The vision of this program is that of becoming a “big sister” to help younger, early-careers geolatinas as they followed a path that some of us have already gone through.
The program aims to create a relaxed environment where mentor and mentee share their experiences without formalities, just like two good friends would do. The main objective is the promotion of functional advice and action plan towards the mentee goals.

Geolatinas mentoring program team does not have any kind of medical qualification or relation to medical degrees. Early warnings and serious mental health conflicts should be referred to the proper professionals.

Ground Rules

  1. The content shared in the mentoring session is strictly confidential.
  2. Mentors commit to gather and enhance coaching/mentoring tools and knowledge to help and assist in the best way possible the mentee. 
  3. Mentors and mentees commit to be responsible with the schedules and tasks. 
  4. The atmosphere should be of absolute respect and trust. No offensive exchange will be tolerated.
